-------------------------------------------------
So far as I know, and this is conjecture, of course, the Keeper of the Ancients was the oldest living human in the Empire... If indeed he was human. He was the mortal to see the Grandfather Dragon, before the Grandfather led his people into battle against Mephistos the Dark. In that terrible battle, Mephistos was banished along with his hordes of daemons, but the race of dragonkind was brought to the brink of extinction. All that was left of the scaled ones were a handful of hatchlings and eggs. These were entrusted to the Keeper (who was known to be a dragonfriend) for safekeeping. Legend has it that the Keeper moved these babies to his Tower, where they had remained for millenia. The Keeper had remained there with the small dragons, caring for them and educating them, being their father. His Tower, far in the Northern Reaches, lay within a valley that was circled by cliffs so high that no man could scale them, and so cold that mens blood froze in their veins. In this, the dragons could live without fear of being taken by the mortals. And live they did. But recently, a small party of adventurers made it to the Keepers Tower... A few certain druids knew ways of getting through the Valley, to provide the Keeper with arcane supplies not readily available from where he was. They found the Tower empty, with signs of a rapid departure. Strangely, there were no indications of violence, so there seemed to be no reason for the absence. The adventurers wandered throughout the Tower, into every place they could go to. Some places were warded by very powerful spells (The Keeper was powerful millenia ago... How would he be now, with thousands of years in isolation to perfect his techniques?), but they were simply the Keepers study, and his laboratory. The Druids sensed no life behind either of those doors. The Keeper was gone, and so were his wards. The druids now have a small party set up to watch the Tower for his possible return, but as the days go by, it looks grimmer and grimmmer. ----------------------------------------------------- And so to answer your question, the Keeper is not a rank, but a person (His guild name was Cryos, or Icedragon). He created this story, and it lives on in his honour.
